Kamchatka / Russia.
East… ..very far east… …57°North / 160°East… …only 20° to the international date line. A eight hour domestic flight inside Russia. Eight hours time difference to Moscow time… ..but still inside Russia.
Fishing, gold mining , wild bears, volcanoes… …a trip that makes you feel far away… ..in distance and time. Priceless.
“It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobbledstreets silent and the hunched courters’-and-rabbits’ wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea.”
(Dylan Thomas, Under Milk Wood)
“I wish I was a fisherman, tumblin’ on the seas
Far away from dry land, and its bitter memories…
…with light in my head, you in my arms, woo”
Calm, balanced and a bit taciturn was the first approach with the ice fishermen. But after a brief chat about technique, wheater and the right fishing lures the ‘ice’ had melted. They let me do my shots to capture the peace and serenity of this hobby. But I think that ‘hobby’ is is not the right term. Some concider it as sports. Some as hunting… …and for some is it a complementary livelihood. This images I took in late February at the frozen river Volga in the city of Tver/Russia.
